49ers Week 1

The San Francisco 49ers drop their first game of the season to the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 24-16. A Lot of people didn’t think this game was going to be as close as it was and the 49ers did not play all that well but still had many opportunities to win this game which is one positive to take away from this game. Jimmy Garoppolo had many ups and downs and to be honest this was his worst game in a 49ers uniform. Not everything can be put on Jimmy as his receivers didn’t do much to help him in critical point in the game. One thing that really became clear in this game against the Vikings is that the 49ers are in need of a legit redzone receiving threat. Kittle is a nice option to go to in the red zone but he can’t be your only one, there is no other receiver on the team right now that poses a legit threat to go up and get the ball in the red zone.

Despite some critical drops by receivers and some questionable decisions by Grappolo the offense did show that they can move the ball down field. Kittle was a huge part of that and rookie WR Dante Pettis showed why the 49ers selected him in the second round, catching the only touchdown of the game for the 49ers. The running game has to improve and I think it will once they figure how they are going to use both Matt Breida and Alfred Morris. The lost of Jerick McKinnon before the season was a huge blow and really things dramatically in both the running and passing game for the 49ers.

Defensively the 49ers played well, there is still a need for another pass rusher just to make it more consistent. Deforest Buckner already showed that he is poised for a breakout season tallying up 2.5 sacks with 7 tackles. Buckner could really become a issue for offensive lines if the 49ers could add another pass rusher for teams to worry about. Richard Sherman also played well in his 49ers regular season debut. It doesn’t seem like he has lost to much of a step and that was a huge concern for people especially coming off of an Achilles injury, but what I think most people for got was that Sherman was never dominant because of his speed, it was because of his size and his ability to know what the QB was going to do and that showed in the game against the Vikings. The real defensive stand out was rookie LB Fred Warner who is starting in place of Reuben Foster who is serving a 2 game suspension. In his first NFL start he totaled 12 tackles, 11 of them being solo and 1 tackle for loss. If he continues this play in week 2 there is no doubt that he will starting next to Foster in week 3.

The 49ers are coming into a game that is very winnable for them. If they can continue to move the ball the ball the way they did against Minnesota and actually score when in the red zone they should have no problem getting there first win if the season.
